OVERVIEW
Marine Mammal Observers (MMOs) monitor and protect marine mammals during offshore wind survey, construction, and installation activities. Working offshore or on vessels, MMOs ensure that operations comply with environmental legislation and licence conditions designed to minimise impacts on species such as dolphins, whales, seals, and porpoises. This role suits people with a strong interest in marine ecology, environmental protection, and field-based offshore work.

- Observe and identify marine mammals during offshore activities.
- Monitor defined mitigation zones around vessels and works.
- Advise construction and vessel crews when mitigation or shutdowns are required.
- Record sightings, behaviour, and environmental conditions.
- Prepare daily logs and post-survey reports.
- Ensure compliance with Marine Scotland licence conditions.
- Support Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) teams where required.
- Promote environmental awareness among offshore crews
