ScottishPower Renewables Submits Planning Application for 2GW MachairWind Project
ScottishPower Renewables (SPR) has submitted its offshore consent application to the Scottish Government for the MachairWind project off the West Coast of Scotland
SPR has taken the next step in the development of its 2GW offshore wind farm off the coast of Argyll and Bute area in the West of Scotland with its application for a Section 36 consent to the Marine Directorate. The MachairWind project off the coast of Islay, which could deliver 2GW of clean renewable energy, will make a significant contribution to tackling climate change with the potential to generate enough clean electricity to power over 2 million homes in Scotland.
SPR have engaged and consulted with the island communities nearest to the project which, alongside Islay, includes Colonay, Jura, Iona and Mull. SPR are also engaging with Argyll and Bute Council and Highlands and Islands Enterprise to help maximise the opportunity for local employment and supply chain activity should a successful planning outcome be achieved in 2027.
This is now the second West Coast fixed bottom offshore wind project from the ScotWind leasing round to have submitted its planning application and is a significant milestone for the development of offshore wind on Scotland's West Coast.
