SOWEC appoints two new subgroup chairs to drive forward offshore wind
The Scottish Offshore Wind Energy Council has appointed two senior industry figures to lead key strands of its work to drive progress in the offshore wind sector.
Scotland’s offshore wind energy sector requires a robust workforce to achieve net zero by 2045. As part of this commitment to attracting new talent to the industry, the Scottish Offshore Wind Energy Council’s (SOWEC) Skills subgroup has recently attended careers fairs to inform graduates of the variety of career paths available in Scotland’s offshore wind sector.
Skills group members Dougie Knox and Greg Haylott attended the University of Strathclyde, Dundee University and the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) graduate fairs to inspire the next generation of talent to consider a role in Scotland’s offshore wind industry. The students had the opportunity to learn about the different roles available within the sector, while finding out more about SOWEC’s key industry partners hiring for graduate positions.
Students from different degree backgrounds, including aerospace, design, IT and engineering, gained a better understanding of the desirable roles and skills required for working in offshore wind, with many finding out the skills learnt while at university are easily transferable into the industry. SOWEC partners, Ocean Winds and SSE Renewables also provided the Skills subgroup with support at these events with previous graduates now fully employed by both partners attending to share their own experiences of working in the offshore wind industry.
The success of the recent careers fairs has resulted in the SOWEC Skills group being invited to attend future careers events, including delivering online information sessions at the UWS
