Scottish Government Good Practice Principles for Offshore Community Benefits Launched

7 September 2015

Local Energy Scotland are pleased to launch the Scottish Government’s Good Practice Principles for Community Benefits from Offshore Renewables

In line with the onshore counterpart, the Scottish Government wishes to see Scotland’s communities sharing in the benefits of the country’s rich natural resources. Developers are encouraged to consider and adhere to the document on any forthcoming offshore renewable energy projects.

Following the publication of the document, Mr Ewing, Minister for Business, Energy and Tourism commented, “The launch of the Scottish Government’s Good Practice Principles outlines our commitment to ensuring that local groups across Scotland have the opportunity to maximise benefit from renewable energy. Over £9 million is provided annually to Scottish community groups from onshore renewable energy projects, and there is scope to build on this success with forthcoming offshore projects. We are pleased to be leading the UK in setting out high-level expectations for the provision of voluntary measures from offshore renewable energy projects.”

We hope this document will be a useful tool for those considering appropriate community benefit schemes from offshore renewable energy projects. The offshore industry is in early stages and there is scope to explore and deliver community benefits on forthcoming schemes. The document outlines Scottish Government expectations, alongside helpful background information and further guidance for developers and other stakeholders.

The Scottish Government wishes to thank Scottish Renewables for their support in developing practical Principles for Scotland’s offshore developers. This document has been developed with input from a number of stakeholders, including industry, local authorities, community groups, academia and others active in the sector. Public consultation on the document was carried out in 2014, followed by focused research to learn from good practice in delivery of community benefits from offshore renewables globally.
